VASILITSA is one of the most popular ski resorts in Northern Greece, especially for snowboarders and freeriders. With great tree runs and more consistent snowfall than the mountains further South, it’s definitely one of the most playful hills around. Effectively it has 2 chairlifts, one Anchor lift and a baby lift (there are some more lifts but 99.99% of the time they don’t work).
From Athens – head North to Lamia and follow the road towards Trikala. Once you pass Kalabaka take the right turn up towards Grevena.
From Thessaloniki – get on Egnatia highway and go towards Grevena. There are signs by the road leading to the resort.
If the snow is good, take the anchor lift and traverse out to the right of the pistes. The whole zone out there is tons of fun. Don’t get stranded too far out though. Remember to traverse back to the lift.
If you want to go off-piste there’s a good variety of backcountry to hit. The other side of the mountain, above the V1850 refuge, is called Gomara. The lifts don’t run on that side any more, and the Northern aspect is great to ride down. The walk out is easy, or you can traverse back to the road to the right of the couloirs.
